Au mythique MCG, devant une assistance de 50000 spectateurs, les Hawks de Hawthorn ont eu raison de coriaces Blues de Carlton en l'emportant 118 à 90. Après avoir dominé le premier quart-temps, le champion en titre a été bousculé dans les deux quart-temps suivants voyant les Blues revenir à 5 petits points à l'issue du troisième quart. Cependant, la fin de match allait être à l'avantage des Hawks qui allait recreuser l'écart grâce notamment à 3 buts de Cyril Rioli.
