Dans le match au sommet qui a tenu toutes ses promesses, les Sydney Swans ont réussi à s'imposer face au leader Port Adelaide sur le score de 98 à 94. Les débats ont été équilibrés durant toute la partie avec cependant toujours un léger avantage en faveur des joueurs locaux. Ainsi, à la mi-temps, les Swans menaient de 7 petits points au terme de deux premiers quart-temps très disputés. Dans le troisième quart-temps, Sydney prenait une avance non négligeable de 22 points après deux goals inscrits par Lance Franklin (auteur de 5 goals au total et d'une prestation remarquable).
